Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a great playoff race. The Minnesota Twins have finally started playing great ball and they are just about even with the Detroit Tigers. As of right now, the Twins trail the Tigers by just 2.5 games.

But with the way the Twins are playing and the way the Tigers are playing (if you can really call it playing), I would have to favor the Twins to win the division. In fact, at this point I’d be more surprised if the Tigers held onto this lead.

If the Twins do complete their charge and overtake the Tigers, then they will head into postseason play as one of the hottest teams in baseball. They may even be considered THE hottest team in the American League. Whether or not that will allow them to beat the likes of the New York Yankees, the Anaheim Angels, or the Boston Red Sox is obviously still very much in the air. All 3 of the other teams are better up and down their line-up. But the Twins are very tough to beat one their home field. Teams hate playing in the Metrodome. In fact, it might be the worst place to play baseball in the entire sport (including minor league parks). But the Twins love it and they are very good there. That would then leave them needing to sneak just one game in their opponent’s park. That’s not too tall of an order.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

First the Twins have to catch the Tigers. If there were over 20 games left to play in the season then I would feel completely confident that the Twins would catch Detroit. But right now the Twins have just 12 games left. That’s not a lot. But the Tigers have an extra game to lose. So, if the Twins are only 12 games back then they would have to go just 8-4 in the last 12 while the Tigers go 6-6 or worse. That certainly seems possible given the way both teams are playing.

In fact, the Twins are so hot right now, they might even go 10-2. If they do, they will definitely catch and pass the Tigers.
