As the season continues to grow older and we get close to the playoffs, these ranking take on more and more meaning. So, let’s get right to this week’s rankings:

7. Cincinnati Bengals

The slots 4-7 are definitely the hardest ones to fill. Any of the these teams can be switched around.

But we’ll start with the Bengals at #7. Maybe it’s because they’re the Bengals and I can’t quite allow myself to think of them as a good team.

6. New England Patriots

Sorry, but the Pats were totally outclassed a couple nights ago and I think it is a big deal for them. They just aren’t that good of a team. They’re a top 7 team, but not a top 5 team.

5. Dallas Cowboys

Like it or not, the Cowboys have won 6 of their last 7 games. That’s pretty impressive. If the Cowboys can beat the Giants in New York then they will rise stand a good chance at rising even higher.

4. San Diego Chargers

Are the Chargers the 2nd best team in the AFC? It looks like they just might be. But then again, I could see them losing to half dozen teams in the AFC. But they deserve to be sitting at #4 right now.

3. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts might be undefeated but they’re a vulnerable team. That’s why they’re just #3. Matched up against the Saints or Vikings, I don’t see the Colts winning.

2. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings are a very impressive team. Great defense, great running game, and a great passing game too. Did I really just say that? Yes, Favre has been outstanding. But I’m still not sold on him playing this well all season.

1. New Orleans Saints

Yup, the Saints are undefeated and they’re coming off a huge game against the Pats. That is plenty to earn them the top spot in this week’s rankings (as if they weren’t already there).

The biggest game of this week will be played on Sunday night between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. But there are a lot of good games too. These other games will have a major impact on the playoff picture. These games include the Dallas Cowboys traveling to Green Bay to take on the Packers, the Philadelphia Eagles at the San Diego Chargers, and, of course, the Cincinnati Bengals at the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, let’s pick those games right now.

Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers

This seems to be a match-up of 2 teams heading in opposite directions. The Cowboys have won 4 straight and the Packers just lost to the previously winless Buccaneers. Aaron Rodgers can throw and will challenge the Cowboys secondary. But the pass protection probably won’t hold up against the Dallas pass rush. And the Dallas offense will continue to roll. Therefore, I’m taking the Cowboys.

Philadelphia Eagles at San Diego Chargers

The Eagles are coming off a tough loss against the Cowboys last Sunday night. The alarming thing here is how the Eagles players (and Andy Reid) whined about the officiating in this game. Yes, there were some bad calls but they went both ways – including a missed interference call in the end zone that benefited the Packers. And upon further review, even if McNabb was given the mark he wanted on the 4th and inches play, the Eagles still would’ve been short.

So, I just don’t think the Eagles have the right mental make-up. I’ll take the Chargers at home.

Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers

Nobody is giving the Bengals any respect even though they already beat the Steelers earlier in the year. The Bengals are one of those teams that just might have trouble winning games the second half of the season. Look for their slide to start today. Go with the Steelers.

It’s already time to take a look at the top seven teams in the NFL. Slowly it’s getting easier to separate the top teams from the bottom teams. While it’s really easy to name the top three teams, it’s still pretty murky for spots four through seven.

But let’s give it a shot.

7. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys still have their doubters but I’m beginning to be a believer. That was a really good win in Philly on Sunday night. Romo came up big and so did the Dallas D. Tough game at Green Bay this Sunday but then they have two very winnable games. Don’t be surprised if Dallas is a top three team three weeks from now.

6. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers will play the Bengals this weekend. They’ll have a chance to take over at least the #5 spot after this weekend.

5. Cincinnati Bengals

Yes, the Bengals! They’ve earned this spot. They might be here long though. Because they have to play the Steelers this week. But I won’t count them out of this game. They’ve proven to be a good team.

4. New England Patriots

I don’t like putting them here but I suppose they’ve earned it. Brady is starting to get back to his old self and that spells trouble for the rest of the AFC.

3. Minnesota Vikings

Now the real season begins for Brett Favre. Yes, the media is already crowning him the king but this season if far from over. Look at the hard fall he took last year. He will take a similar fall this year too. But right now the Vikings are the third best team.

2. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts continue to get the job done. They haven’t been pretty the last couple of weeks but there are still very good. With Manning at the helm, this will always be a tough team to beat.

1. New Orleans Saints

The Saints have been struggling a little the last couple of weeks. But they are still the best team in the NFL. They have a decent defense and an offense that is just scary. They can score points like crazy.

As I noted in a post a couple days ago, there are a lot of huge games this week in the NFL. But some of the games are bigger than others. The 3 biggest games of this weekend are the Dallas Cowboys visiting the Philadelphia Eagles, the Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots, and the Monday night game that features the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Denver Broncos.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos

First, let’s take a look at the one match-up that’s not a division rivalry. That’s the Steelers at the Broncos. This is a big game for the Broncos. They charged out of the gate to 6-0. But they got smashed last week against the Ravens. The Broncos are going to want to bounce back against the Steelers. But the Steelers are a really good team. And they will put pressure on Orton and shutdown the Broncos’ offense.

So, I’m taking the Steelers in this one.

Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots

The Dolphins are 3-0 in their divisional games but winless in all the other games. The Pats’ offense is starting to click better as Tom Brady seems like he’s finally getting his timing back. The Dolphins better watch out in this one. They just might be ripe to get hammered.

I’m going with the Pats to win by at least 10 points.

Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Phillies

Everyone remembers Dallas going into Philly last year with the playoffs on the line. The Cowboys got routed 44-6. They were just horrible.

This isn’t the same Cowboys team but they still have the same coaches. Still, I can almost guarantee that this will be a close game. In fact, I can almost guarantee that Dallas wins this game if they win the turnover battle.

Expect the Eagles to come out on fire and try to shake Dallas’ confidence early. If Dallas can withstand the early onslaught and they can protect the ball then they will win this game.

I like the Cowboys to at least cover. Take the Boys.

Here we are about midway through the NFL season. Most teams have played 7 games but some have played 8 games. So now we’re beginning to get a really good idea about which teams are really good and which teams are really bad. But, there still isn’t anything that’s completely certain.

Yet, since week one most so-called experts have been trying to say which teams are good and bad since week one. Back then I wrote about how ridiculous that was. And it’s still ridiculous to be doing it now.

Want proof? How about the fact that the San Francisco 49ers were supposed to be a really good team after the first couple games of the season? They’ve pretty much fallen flat since then. Or how about the New York Giants being the “best team in football” for the first five weeks or so. Now they’ve lost 3 straight games.

Now, the funny thing is that now ESPN and other media outlets are talking about how the Giants have so many holes. They make it sound like the Giants will struggle to win a couple more games this year. But, that’s just as foolish as saying they were the best team in football about a month ago.

the bottom line is this: The football season is really long and there is a lot that can happen in one single game, never mind an entire month or a half a season. Therefore, nobody really knows what’s what with any team in the NFL.

For example, if the Saints lose Brees they will be lost. If the Colts lose Manning then they can forget it. We’re talking winning maybe 3 or 4 more games the rest of the season. And that change of fortunes can happen in a split second on just one play.

So, who is the best team in the NFL? Right now it’s the Saints. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Nobody knows who’ll be on top next week. That’s part of the beauty of the NFL.
