Game: Stoke City vs Portsmouth
Competition: English Premier League
Venue: Britannia Stadium
Time: 16:00 GMT

Stoke City, with the loudest fans in the Premier League, take on bottom club Portsmouth in last of Sunday’s games. Portsmouth are the only club in the League with single digit points and are four points from safety. They let in three goals from set pieces against Blackburn in their last game. Stoke, who are famous for their long throws and route one approach, will pose a similar threat, egged on by the fans at the Brittania Stadium.

Form Guide ( Last few games- all competitions- Stoke City)
v. Hull (Loss) 1-2 (Etherington)
v. Wolves (Draw) 2-2 (Elekobi OG, Etherington)
v. Tottenham (Win) 1-0 (Whelan)
v. West Ham (Win) 2-1 (Beattie * 2)

Stoke skipper Abdoullaye Faye is suspended after being sent off against Hull in the last game. German international Robert Huth will deputise for him. Also, Glen Whelan is a doubt after picking up a slight knock in Ireland’s WCQ against France. With Dave Kitson being loaned out at Middlesbrough, James Beattie will lead the line alongwith Sanli Tuncay.

Form guide – Portsmouth(most recently played game on top)
v. Blackburn (Loss) 1-3 (O’Hara)
v. Wigan (Win) 4-0 (Dindane*3, Piquionne)
v. Hull (Draw) 0-0
v. Tottenham (Loss) 1-2 (Kevin Prince Boateng)

Paul Hart’s team has a mighty impressive record against Stoke. Portsmouth are unbeaten in five league and cup matches against Stoke, winning all three home games and drawing twice, both at the Britannia Stadium. They even demolished Stoke 4-0 in the League Cup Pre-Quarter Finals two weeks ago.

Pompey have injury troubles aplenty. Dindane, Ward, Utaka, Finnan and Yebda are all struggling with minor injuries. Heremann Hreidarsson though is available after a hamstring injury. Linvoy Primus and Papa Bouba Diop remain long term absentees.

Match verdict: Given the record that Pompey have against the hosts, you’d be tempted to go for a away win for the bottom placed club, given that you’d be getting decent odds on them. But I suggest you exercise caution. I’d go for a scored draw.

Stoke 1-1 Portsmouth (Beattie / Piquionne)

Venue: Fratton Park
Time: 12:45 GMT

Pompey take on Everton in the early kickoff on Saturday as the look forward to break their Premier League duck. Paul Hart’s men have no points from the first six games of the season and are six points adrift visitors Everton who have recovered well after a dismal start to the season.

Here are some excellent bookmakers for you to place a bet. Be sure to read our preview before heading over to bet.
12Bet
10Bet
Bodog

Form guide – Portsmouth(most recently played game on top)
v. Carlisle (Win) 3-1 (Dindane*2, Danny Webber)
v. Aston Villa(Loss) 0-2
v. Bolton(Loss) 2-3 (Kaboul, Boateng)
v. Man City (Loss) 0-1

Paul Hart may grant Aruna Dindane a place in the playing eleven after a strong display in midweek. Right back Steve Finnan played in a closed-doors friendly and could start as well. But Hart will be without the services of Papa Bouba Diop and Hermann Hreidarsson.

Form guide – Everton (most recently played game on top)
v. Hull City (Win) 4-0 (Yakubu, Jo, Gosling, Osman)
v. Blackburn (Win) 1-0 (Saha*2, Yobo)
v. AEK Athens (Win) 4-0 (Yobo, Distin, Pienaar, Jo)
v. Fulham(Loss) 1-2(Cahill)

Although Everton have their last three games, only one win has been in the Premier League. Everton’s Nigerian forward Yakubu returned for the midweek game but had to be withdrawn at half-time. He would have to prove his fitness or settle for a place on the bench. Steven Pienaar and Joseph Yobo are also to have late fitness tests. The game marks the return to Fratton Park for Sylvain Distin who left Pompey not too long ago.

Match verdict: After not having a single point for half a dozen games, Pompey will have the greater desire to perform – that too in front of their home supporters. I see a slight upset in this one. I wouldn’t vouch for Everton winning this. I’d go for a draw with Portsmouth having my vote if a clear victor has to be chosen. If Dindane starts, he should be favourite to be the first goal scorer.
Portsmouth 1-1 Everton (Dindane, Saha)

Managerless Portsmouth face Manchester City in Saturday’s only Premier League fixture at Fratton Park.

Pompey fired manager Tony Adams earlier this week after just 22 games in the hot seat. Last Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Liverpool was the last straw for Pompey’s management, who felt the need to bring somebody new if the club had to arrest its alarming downslide. Caretaker boss Paul Hart has a tough job on his hands- the players are low on morale, and Pompey have lost seven of their last eight games. Papa Bouba Diop, Richard Hughes and Jerome Thomas continue to be absent.

Portsmouth form- last five games- all competitions- Portsmouth scorers in brackets

Portsmouth 2-3 Liverpool ( David Nugent, Hermann Hreidarsson)
Fulham 3-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)
Portsmouth 0-1 Aston Villa
Portsmouth 0-2 Swansea ( FA Cup)
Tottenham 1-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)

All three of Pompey’s recent goals have come from David Nugent, who enjoyed a new lease of life under Tony Adams.

Manchester City beat Middlesbrough 1-0 last week, with goalkeeper Shay Given making some excellent saves on his debut. Welsh forward Craig Bellamy scored the solitary goal of the game. City will be without skipper Richard Dunne and right winger Shaun Wright Phillips, with both of them suspended. A win for City will take them above West Ham, into eighth place.

Manchester City form- last five games- all competitions

Man City 1-0 Middlesbrough ( Craig Bellamy)
Stoke City 1-0 Man City
Man City 2-1 Newcastle ( Craig Bellamy, Shaun Wright Philips)
Man City 1-0 Wigan ( Pablo Zabaleta)
Man City 0-3 Nottingham Forest ( FA Cup)

The odds are against Pompey, but you need to remember that City have not won away since August, when they beat Sunderland.

In the last five times that City have visited Fratton Park, they have won only once- losing three and drawing once.

When these two teams met at the CoMs, City whacked Pompey 6-0. I don’t see a repeat of that scoreline though.

Prediction:- Portsmouth 2-2 Manchester City ( David Nugent, Peter Crouch/Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland)

Date : 7 February 2009

Kickoff : 17.30 GMT

Liverpool will aim to put the disappointment of their midweek FA Cup exit at the hands of Everton behind them and go to the top of the Premiership table, albeit temporarily, when they take on Tony Adams’ Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday evening.

Liverpool were dealt a triple blow by Everton in midweek. They were knocked out of the FA Cup, Lucas Leiva was sent off, and their talismanic skipper Steven Gerrard was injured. Gerrard is out of action for the next three weeks, and that will deprive Liverpool of their most influential player against Portsmouth. It also heaps more pressure on Fernando Torres, for the Spaniard, along with Gerrard, has played a vital part in most of Liverpool’s goals this season.

Torres is at 4.100 to score first during this game at 10Bet.

Xabi Alonso is also a decent bet to score. He is quoted at 6.100 at 10Bet to score any time during the game.

Liverpool form last five games- all competitions- Liverpool scorers in brackets

Portsmouth are on an eight game winless streak in the Premier League. Their last league win came against Blackburn in November, and last week, they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Fulham. Under pressure boss Tony Adams has bolstered his side with the acquisitions of Theofanis Gekas from Leverkusen and Angelos Basinas from AEK. Sol Campbell might be fit to play. The same goes for Croatian playmaker Niko Kranjcar. Winger Jermaine Pennant is ineligible to face his former club.

Portsmouth form- last five games- all competitions

Fulham 3-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)
Portsmouth 0-1 Aston Villa
Portsmouth 0-2 Swansea ( FA Cup)
Tottenham 1-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)
Bristol City 0-2 Portsmouth ( Peter Crouch, Niko Kranjcar)

Liverpool beat Chelsea earlier this season without their skipper and I think they can do the same here against a Pompey side dreadfully out of form. Liverpool 2-0 Portsmouth, with Torres and Xabi Alonso scoring.

Competition : English Premiership

Time : 20.00 UK time

Days after their reign as FA Cup champions ended, Portsmouth face high flying Aston Villa in a game which could see Emile Heskey making his debut for the Birmingham based team.

Heskey is expected to start alongside Gabriel Agbonlahor in attack for Aston Villa. At 10Bet, Heskey is at 2.800 to score anytime in the game, and 6.550 to be the first to score. Jermain Defoe scored on his debut for Tottenham, and we could Emile doing the same.

Portsmouth may give both Pele and Hayden Mullins their debuts. Papa Bouba Diop, Niko Kranjcar and Richard Hughes are all unavailable for Tony Adams. Portsmouth’s recent form has been pretty abysmal as the statistics below will tell you.

Last five games- Portsmouth

Portsmouth 0-2 Swansea City ( FA Cup)
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)
Bristol City 0-2 Portsmouth ( Niko Kranjcar, Peter Crouch) – FA Cup
Portsmouth 0-0 Bristol City
Arsenal 1-0 Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s last league win was in November against Blackburn Rovers.

Aston Villa were held to a draw by Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup fourth round. Ashley Young is suspended for Villa and defensive stalwart Martin Laursen is injured. Emile Heskey is likely to make his debut as stated earlier.

Aston Villa last five games

Doncaster 0-0 Aston Villa
Sunderland 1-2 Aston Villa ( James Milner, Gareth Barry)
Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom ( Curtis Davies, OG)
Gillingham 1-2 Aston Villa ( James Milner*2)
Hull 0-1 Aston Villa (OG)

Aston Villa have played exceptionally well away from home this season, and I expect them to beat Portsmouth. Villa to win 2-1, with Heskey, Agbonlahor and Crouch to score.
