Both USA and Algeria are still with a shout of making it to the next round. A win for USA would ensure qualification. If they draw, then they would need Slovenia to defeat England to be assured of qualifying. Algeria need to win the game and hope that England do not defeat Slovenia. Bob Bradley’s attacking brand of football has impressed the neutrals with Altidore, Dempsey and Donovan leading the charge. Young striker Robbie Findlay is suspended after picking up two yellow cards and will be replaced by Edson Buddle.

Algeria’s lack of goals is a real worry for Rabah Saadane – the only African coach in the tournament. They have scored just once in their last five outings. Matmour, Ziani, Boudebouz and Djebbour have been ineffective in front of goals. Les Fennecs will welcome back Abdelkader Ghezzal after suspension. Their back line looks stable with Yahia, Halliche, Belhadj and Bougherra.

Verdict: USA 2-0 Algeria (Donovan,Altidore)

United States were unlucky to draw their first two games. They should make it to the next round with a comfortable win over Algeria.

Gerrard will be given a floating role.

Robert Green’s howler cost England a win against US. Capello will have to decide whether to replace the West Ham keeper with David James who himself is famous for committing high profile mistakes. Gerrard, Milner and Carragher are on a yellow.

Another loss against England would spell the end of their competition. Abdelkader Ghezzal is suspended after being sent off against Slovenia. Hasan Yebda is on a yellow. Rafik Saifi, who started on the bench against Slovenia is likely to get a look in from the start.

A decisive game at the 2010 World Cup sees Algeria and Slovenia meet for the first time ever in international competition on Sunday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Defeat for either team would be a damaging blow to their ambitions of qualifying for the next round.

Slovenia could probably not have picked a better time to play Algeria. The Desert Foxes lost four straight games before managing to secure a facile 1-0 win over the United Arab Emirates. Coach Rabah Saadane has come down heavily on his players and has announced that he will BENCH captain Yazid Mansouri due to the latter’s poor form. Mansouri will be replaced by Santander’s Medhi Lacen in midfield. The skipper’s armband will be worn by defender Antar Yahia in Polokwane on Sunday.

Verdict:- Both teams need to make this count and given their form in the runup to the tournament, Algeria might not be able to get the result they require.

Both Nigeria and Algeria were found wanting at the semifinal stage of the competition. They have a chance to salvage some pride and get their hands on the bronze medal when they meet in the third place playoff in Benguela, a day before the finals.

In their semi-final, a solitary goal by Gyan Asamoah in the 21st minute was enough to relegate Nigeria to the third place playoff match. The Newcastle United striker wasted a couple of clear cut chances. When the Eagles contrived to keep their shots on target, Ghana keeper Richard Kingston proved to be an unsurmountable hurdle. Yakubu came on in the second half and had two decent chances which he wasted. Shaibu Amodu will be tempted to include Seyi Olofinjana, Kalu Uche and Dickson Etuhu in the starting lineup against Algeria. Onyekachi Apam will be available for selection after serving his suspension. Joseph Yobo will be the notable absentee at the back.

Faouzi Chaouchi, Nadir Belhadj and Rafik Halliche can’t be the goalscorers as all of them have been suspended following their red cards against Egypt in the semi-final. Veteran striker Rafik Saifi faces a race against time to be fit for the game. If fit, he will be the Fennecs’ main threat in the attacking third.

Match Verdict:Algeria’s fralilties were exposed horribly by Egypt in the semis. Nigeria put up a more respectable performance in defeat. Going on current form, Nigeria should edge this one.

Ivory Coast and Algeria meet for the first time ever in an African Nations Cup quarterfinal this Sunday, with a possible semifinal meeting against holders Egypt awaiting the winner.

Ivory Coast started off with a disappointing draw against Burkina Faso but did enough to beat Ghana’s youngsters 3-1 in their second game. However the withdrawal of Togo means that the Ivorians have not played for nearly a week and that may work in Algeria’s favour.

Ivory Coast played with a 4-1-4-1 formation in both their group games. Skipper Didier Drogba operates as the sole striker with Gervinho and Salomon Kalou operating on the wings behind him. Right back Emmanuel Eboue is suspended after seeing red against Ghana. Vahid Halilhodzic is expected to replace the Arsenal star with HSV’s Guy Demel.

Algeria were made to work hard for their qualification. The Desert Foxes put in a toothless performance against Malawi in their group opener but a win against Mali, followed by a goalless draw against hosts Angola, was enough to see Les Fennecs through.

Coach Rabah Saadane will be worried by the form of his forward line. In three games at the 2010 African Cup of Nations, Algeria scored only once and that too came from their defence. Abdelkader Ghezzal, who started as the lone striker against both Mali and Angola, will have his job cut out against the likes of Kolo Toure and Sol Bamba. A lot will depend on playmaker Karim Ziani and how he fares against Yaya Toure and Didier Zokora in the middle of the park.

Verdict:- Les Elephants look too strong for the Foxes on paper. Also, Algeria’s form at this stage of the tournament is against them- they have failed to win on the previous three occasions they reached the last eight.
