NFL Football: Week 17 Preview
Posted on | December 26, 2007 | No Comments
As we roll into the last week of the regular season, there are really only 3 games that are important this week. Those games are the Dallas Cowboys at the Washington Redskins, the Tennessee Titans at the Indianapolis Colts, and the New England Patriots at the New York Giants.
The Redskins and the Titans are going for playoff spots while the Pats are going for a perfect season. But none of these games will be very close because none of the other teams are going to play their key starters for very long.
The Cowboys and the Colts have clinched their spots in the playoffs. The Cowboys have home-field advantage in the NFC while the Colts have the #2 seed sewn up in the AFC. Both of these teams will have a bye and they’re going to want to rest their players for a couple weeks.
Meanwhile, the Redskins and the Titans are fighting for playoff spots. So they have everything to play for while the Cowboys and Colts have nothing to play for. Therefore, I don’t see either of these games being close.
Meanwhile the Pats will be going for a perfect regular season against a Giants team that has already clinched the #5 seed in the NFC. The Giants aren’t planning on playing their own key starters very long, if at all. So the Pats will come rolling into Giants Stadium and steamroll the Giants.
So we are set-up for a final weekend of football that will make even the most diehard fan yawn and wonder what more he can eat and drink.
If the Dallas Cowboys had their star receiver, Terrell Owens, healthy this week, they may be tempted to go all-out and attempt to knock the Redskins out of the playoffs. After all, a Redskins win will mean that they then move on to play against the Seattle Seahawks – a team the Skins can certainly beat. And then it will be on to Texas Stadium to play the Cowboys again – this time with a chance to play for the Super Bowl on the line.
But without Owens, the Cowboys will rest some of their key starters and probably put together a very vanilla game plan. They won’t want to tip their hand and give the Redskins a plan for the next meeting in two weeks.
So as we face a rather boring weekend of NFL football, we can take solace knowing that the playoffs are just around the corner.
