One of the big match-ups this Sunday involves the Dallas Cowboys visiting the New York Giants. This is a battle for first place in the NFC East. If the Cowboys win then they would be two games better than the Giants, which would basically equal a three game lead since the Cowboys would hold the head-to-head tie breaker. If the Giants win, it would pull them into a tie with the Cowboys, though the Cowboys would still technically own the tie breaker since the Cowboys have a better record against NFC opponents.

These two teams met in Texas Stadium (the home field of the Dallas Cowboys) on the first Sunday night of the season. It was quite a shootout. The Cowboys won the game 45-35. Both Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo and Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning had bug games. For Romo it was one of a handful of great games he’s played this year. For Manning, it was probably his best performance.

Based on the first game, you might think this game would be another shootout, but it probably won’t be. Why? Well, because both of these defenses have greatly improved since the beginning of the season.

The Giants front four has really played well of late. They get to the quarterback with unbelievable consistency. The Cowboys defense is finally beginning to get healthy. They will have Tank Johnson (coming off an eight game suspension) playing in the middle of the d-line, Greg Ellis at outside linebacker, and Terrance Newman at corner. All three of these players missed the first game. All three of these of players can make a lot of difference on their own. Added collectively, they’ll give the Giants a lot more to think about.

This game is also the battle of streaks. The Giants, after losing their first two games, have now strung together six straight wins. The Cowboys have yet to lose a road game this year.

Many people believe that whichever team wins this game will take control of the NFC East. That’s not completely true. A win for the Cowboys would give them control of the division. A win for the Giants would simply pull them even with the Cowboys, and as I already said, the Cowboys would still own the tiebreaker.

This game should be very close and I’ll wait until just before the game to make my final prediction. But I like the way the Cowboys have been playing and I’m not so sure the Giants match-up all that well. But we will see.
