Champions league: Valencia vs. Rosenberg

Valencia receive Rosenberg in the Mestalla stadium in a crucial game for the locals. They need to get six points from this match and the next against Schalke 04 in order to travel to London in their final group stage game against the all powerful Chelsea to have any hope at all of qualifying for the next round. There is good news, though. The first is that new coach Ronald Koeman has now taken charge of the Spanish side and this will be his first game in charge. In Spain there is a saying, which translated goes something like this: New coach in, the team’s going to win’, and I think a win is just what they will get. Koeman has shown that, although he is a young coach, has the quality and talent to make a great manager in the future. The other good news is the return of David Villa. He has been out now for almost a month and Valencia desperately need his goals. At the weekend they won away to Mallorca by two goals to nil, both from Fernando Morientes. I’m betting he will start this Champions league match partnering Villa up front, so we can expect at least a couple of goals. Although they won and scored twice, their game didn’t improve that much. They only had two shots on goal the entire game, but luckily they both went in.

Another reason why Valencia need to win is because they have been without a home victory since September 26^th. That is a long time for the fans to have to wait and they are turning into Valencia’s biggest problem now. The five one humiliation at the hands of Real Madrid does seem to be fading though and a win here against Rosenberg (who are having a relatively bad season so far) will help even more.

I’m going for a home victory in this game. I don’t think Valencia will win but more like Rosenberg are sure to lose. They don’t have the squad to be able to travel to Mestalla and pick up any points, and the last game in the Champions league where they beat Valencia I think was more a fluke than anything else. Valencia have a strong squad and once Koeman starts asserting his authority over the players things will begin to turn around. Starting with Rosenberg tomorrow night.
