La Liga: Getafe vs. Murcia

Posted on | October 18, 2007 | No Comments

It’s curious how so few world class players are able to become world class coaches. Johan Cruyff was one, and if Getafe coach Michael Laudrup wants to join this elite group, he’ll have to turn things around quickly at this Spanish club. Getafe are languishing second from bottom with just two points form seven games. Laudrup goes into this game knowing his job is on the line and a bad result could well end his short career as a coach in Spain. Getafe have lost back to back games against Mallorca, Real Madrid and Valencia. The good news is they played better than the three teams that beat them but are suffering form an astonishing lack of goals. Goal scoring opportunities have had, but with just five goals in seven games you know where the problem lies. Or one of the problems. Since defender Alexis left at the close season to join Valencia, the back four haven’t been able to gel quite as well as last season. They’ve conceded thirteen goals this season which is almost two a game. Not the kind of statistics for a club who are aiming for a UEFA cup spot come season’s end.
Murcia, one of three new comers to the top flight of Spanish football, have had quite a modest start to the season, but that said can’t be too unhappy. They currently occupy a comfortable tenth position in the league and would be more than content to finish the season in the same place. This will be the first time both clubs have faced each other in the first division. The last game between them was over four years ago when both were in the second tier. On those four occasions the honors are jointly shared; Getafe beat Murcia twice at home and lost twice away.
I can really see this game ending in a draw here. Getafe will come out with everything they have got, while Murcia will probably sit back and chance their luck on the break. Watch out for two strikers. Getafe’s Uche and Murica’s Baiano. One, or both of them is going to store.
Prediction: Draw (1-1)
