MLB: Day One Hundred and Eighty-Five

Posted on | October 13, 2007 | No Comments

So this is the calm before the storm. Behind us is the regular season and ahead of us are the playoffs. It promises to be as great a post-season as the regular season. Before we take a look at the match-ups that begin tomorrow, let’s first take a quick look at the season that was.

Of course the big individual accomplishment of this year was Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron’s all-time homerun record. Many people would like to put an asterisk next to the record because Bonds is thought to have taken steroids. Though it hasn’t been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, it does seem very likely that he did indeed bulk up using some type of a foreign substance.

We also saw most of the teams from last year’s playoffs already bow out of this year’s playoffs. The two teams from the World Series last year – the Detroit Tigers and the St Louis Cardinals (last year’s champs) – are already done. So are the Oakland A’s, the Minnesota Twins, the New York Mets, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres. In fact, the only team from last year’s playoffs that’s left is the New York Yankees. So let’s begin there.

The Yankees will play against the Cleveland Indians. The Indians are a very solid team with great pitching and very good hitting. The Yankees have all the pressure in the world on them. Making the playoffs is not good enough for them and if they lose in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year, things will not be good in New York. It will also be interesting to see how Alex Rodriguez does in the playoffs after having an unbelievable regular season. But A-Rod is usually great during the season and then not good at all in the playoffs.

The Boston Red Sox will take on a hurting Anaheim team. This could be one of the most lopsided series. The Chicago Cubs are expecting to make noise but they really are probably the worst team in the playoffs. They will face the Arizona Diamondbacks. And the Colorado Rockies will be playing against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are probably the second hottest team in the National League – second only to the Rockies. So this series will pit two hot teams against each other.

The waiting is almost over. Let October baseball begin.
