MLB: Day One Hundred and Eighty

Now would be a great time for the New York Mets to freak out. Here it is Thursday, the very last week of the season, and the New York Mets have been caught by the Philadelphia Phillies. And let’s not make any mistake about this, this is a huge collapse.
The New York Mets were in total control of the National League East for almost the entire season. Sure, the Mets were challenged at times by both the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies but for the most part the Mets always had control of the division. Now, as the season winds down, the Mets are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies have been playing well lately, but the real reason the Mets are now tied with the Phillies is because the Mets have collapsed. The Mets have lost four straight games. On Thursday they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of three to zero. So the Mets now need to start winning games or they will find themselves out on the outside looking in.
The Phillies, on the other hand, beat the Atlanta Braves six to four on Thursday. That was the second straight win for the Phillies and their seventh win out of the last ten games. So, again, the Phillies are playing decent ball but not extraordinary. The Mets have given away the division lead more than the Phillies have taken it.
If you want to talk about the hottest team in baseball, you have to talk about the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies have won eleven straight games and they’ve jumped right up into the race for the NL West and the NL Wild Card. The question here is whether there is enough time for the Rockies to make up the ground to earn a playoff spot.
The two teams ahead of the Rockies – the Diamondbacks (for the division lead) and the San Diego Padres (for the Wild Card) – are also playing good baseball. And with just a few games left in the season, there just night not be enough time for the Rockies. The one good thing about the Rockies chances for a Wild Card is that they are just one game behind the San Diego Padres.
In the NL East it will be the Mets playing the Marlins this weekend and the Phillies playing Nationals. In the National League West it will be the D-Backs playing the Rockies (a huge match-up) and the Padres playing against Milwaukee Brewers.
