MLB: Day One Hundred and Seventy-Nine

Posted on | October 12, 2007 | No Comments

On Wednesday the two New York teams continued to battle it out to win their divisions but things are starting not to look so good. For much of the season it looked as if the Yankees would lose the AL East to the Boston Red Sox and not that seems like a near certainty. However, it also looked for much of the season that the Mets would win the NL East, but now that is in doubt.

The good news for the Yankees is that they have clinched the American League Wild Card. The Yanks have successfully eliminated the Detroit Tigers. So the Yanks are in the playoffs and with the way the Yanks are playing, they could easily reach the World Series and win it all from the position they’re in. However, coming out of the Wild Card position, the Yankees will have to play without home field advantage. Meaning the Yankees will have to win at least one game at two of the following: Boston, Cleveland, and Anaheim. But the Yankees are in the playoffs and after how poorly they began the season, they have to be happy with that.

For almost all the season the New York Mets have looked like they will win the National League East. However, lately the Mets have seemed like they can’t win and the Philadelphia Phillies are charging hard. In fact, the Phillies have now pulled within a game of the Mets. With only four games left to play, the Mets better take care of their own business and win the games that are in front of them. Otherwise, the Mets may find themselves bounced from the playoffs.

No team has ever lost their division when leading by at least seven games with seventeen or fewer games left to play. Well, the Mets are in danger of doing just that. It would be an almost epic collapse, one that hasn’t been seen in Major League Baseball yet.

So the Yankees and the Mets seem to be headed in different directions. The Yankees are playing great baseball and are assured of playing baseball in October. Meanwhile, the Mets are not playing good baseball and they are in danger of missing the playoffs. If the Mets aren’t careful then they could very easily lose their season long lead and simply go home at the end of the season.
