MLB: Day One Hundred and Seventy-Six

On Sunday two divisions were clinched. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim won the American League West while the Cleveland Indians won the American League Central.
The Angels finally got a win over the Seattle Mariners in their weekend series. The Mariners did a very good job of holding off the inevitable by winning the first two games of the series. But the Angels were able to get the best of them by winning the game on Sunday buy a score of seven to four. Now the only thing the Angels need to worry about is trying to get he best record in the American League so that they can earn home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Right now the Angels are tied with the Boston Red Sox and a half game behind the Cleveland Indians.
Speaking of the Cleveland Indians, they clinched the American League Central on Sunday. The Detroit Tigers won to keep their hopes alive but so did the Indians. The Indians beat the Oakland A’s six to two. That win also helped the Indians stay in first place overall in the American League. As I Just mentioned, the Indians are a half game ahead of both the Boston Red Sox and the Anaheim Angels.
Although the Tigers were eliminated from wining the AL Central, it wasn’t all bad news. The Tigers second year pitcher, Justin Verlander (winner of the Rookie of the Year Award last year), won his eighteenth game. This is the second year he won eighteen games. It’s little consolation for the Tigers, but they do have to be happy that Verlander has had two outstanding years.
Now, the one division in the American League that hasn’t been decided yet is the American League East. Of course the Yankees and the Red Sox are still battling it out. It seems like these two teams have been battling it out everyday for the past ten years. Right now the Yankees are back to being only a game and a half out of first place. That’s because the Yanks beat the Toronto Blue Jays while the Red Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Again, the Red Sox (the team and the fans) have to be feeling a little uneasy. The Yanks are knocking on the door and they’re ready to break into first place in the division.
