MLB: Day One Hundred and Seventy-Five

On Saturday the Seattle Mariners continued to cling to a very fine thread of hope. The Cleveland Indians moved a game closer to clinching. And both the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks widened their lead in each of their divisions.
The Seattle Mariners beat the Anaheim Angels again on Saturday. This time Seattle won the game by a score of three to two. However, the Mariners continue to trail the Angels by a seemingly insurmountable seven and a half games. And the magic number for the Angels to clinch the division remains at one game.
Meanwhile, in the American League West, the Cleveland Indians lost but so did second place Detroit. So now the magic number for the Indians to clinch the division is down to one game as well. All the Indians need is a win or a Tigers loss and they will have the AL Central crown.
Over in the National League Central, the Chicago Cubs continue to look like the team to beat. On Saturday the Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of nine to five. Meanwhile the second place Milwaukee Brewers lost again. This time the score was four to three as the Brewers lost to the Atlanta Braves. Of course there is still time for the Brewers to make up the two and a half games that they are currently trailing by. But with the way the Brew Crew has been playing, things are beginning not to look so good for them.
In the National League West, the Arizona Diamondbacks have also opened up a two and a half game lead. The Diamondbacks have won four in a row while the second place team in the division, the San Diego Padres, have now lost two in a row. So the lead stands at two and a half games in a division that has been very tight all season.
The closest race in the National League right now – if you can believe it – is actually the battle going on for the National League East. As I’ve mentioned before, the New York Mets looked like they were going to have this division sealed by this time of the year. But thanks to playing some bad baseball on the part of the Mets, and playing some good baseball on the side of the Philadelphia Phillies, this division is an absolute fight now. And this race looks like it might come down to the end of the season.
