Yesterday we took a look at the American League standings. So now (with today being Tuesday) we’ll take a look at the National League races.

Let’s start in the National League East where an absolutely amazing thing is happening. The New York Mets have given up five straight games to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets did have a six and a half game lead less than a week ago. Now the Mets have lost five straight, the Phillies have won six straight, and the Mets’ lead in the American League East is just one and a half games.

The NL East looked to be over just a week ago. If the Mets surrender their lead and don’t win the division then that would be a collapse of historic proportions. And it doesn’t look good for the Mets. They better start winning right now or they may be going home for October.

In the National League Central things couldn’t be closer. The Milwaukee Brewers have battled back and tied the Chicago Cubs at the top of the division. So now with a dozen games left, this race looks like it will come right down to the end. For the Brewers, who started off so well and then faded, this would feel great to comeback and actually win the division.

In the National League West, things are close as well. The San Diego Padres are a game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks right now. This has been a close race all season and it doesn’t look like any team is going to run away with it. The Diamondbacks are young but they’re good. And the Padres have been playing solid baseball all season. This race should be fun to watch until the end.

The Padres do currently own the lead in the Wild Card race. They are a game and a half up on the Philadelphia Phillies. Then the Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers are four and a half games back. So the Wild Card race is going to be fun to watch too.
