MLB: Day One Hundred and Sixty-Nine
Posted on | October 5, 2007 | No Comments
Sunday the Boston Red Sox finally got a win and extended their lead over the New York Yankees to five and a half games. The Red Sox actually won in grand fashion as they beat-up on the New York ten to one. Still, since this is a four game series, the Yankees will have one more chance to draw a game closer to the Red Sox.
The Detroit Tigers won again on Sunday. They beat the Minnesota Twins again. So now the Tigers trail the Indians by five and a half games for the AL Central crown. However, the Tigers now trail the Yankees (for the Wild Card) by just two and a half games. It looks like this may be where the real race is in the American League.
Each of the divisional races in the AL seem to be somewhat decided, though stranger things have happened. But the Red Sox and the Indians each have five and a half game leads in their division. In the American League the Anaheim Angels are enjoying an eight and half game lead over the Seattle Mariners. So stick a fork in the Mariners, the AL West has been decided.
Meanwhile, in the National League each division is still being contested. The National League East is the least contested right now, but even that race isn’t over. However, with the tight divisional race, the Wild Card race is often overlooked. But it shouldn’t be. There are s five teams within five and a half games of the lead in the Wild Card. And there are three teams within a game and a half of the Wild Card lead.
Right now the San Diego Padres lead the race. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies are only a game and a half back. So it looks like the race for the Wild Card spot will go down to the wire too.
Tomorrow (Monday) and Tuesday we’ll take our weekly look at all the divisional races in baseball. As September passes the halfway point, the season continues to wind down more and more and things will continue to get somewhat clearer. Although this year many divisions are so tight, we may not know anything until the actual end of the month. Only time will tell.
