Peterborough v West Ham Preview

This is another fixture in the Championship featuring two sides who were tipped for completely contrasting campaigns. Following their disastrous stint in the division a couple of years ago, there was every reason for the bookies to tip Peterborough for relegation. However, Posh have surprised everyone by keeping their heads well above water in 18th spot, while opponents West Ham are performing exactly as everyone expected as they sit top of the table.
Even though the majority of Peterborough’s supporters will be delighted with their current position of 18th, some of them might be slightly concerned at the club’s form over the past few weeks. Darren Ferguson’s men approach this encounter having not won in their last seven, with four of their last five games resulting in defeat. Furthermore, the club’s record at London Road is worrying to say the least, with Posh losing four of their last five games at home. Fortunately for Peterborough, they appear to have done most of their hard work at the start of the season as they still sit ten points above the bottom three. With sixteen points still keeping them from the magic fifty point barrier though, Ferguson will know that there is still plenty of work to do and his side must start to improve very quickly.
West Ham appear to be firmly on track with their goal of netting an immediate return to the top flight, with the Hammers four points ahead of 2nd place and six ahead of 3rd. Furthermore, with Sam Allardyce making several high profile signings during the January transfer window, West Ham’s predicament is sure to only get better. For now, the Upton Park outfit are in some very good form and even though there were some several worries following a 5-1 defeat to Ipswich a couple of weeks ago, that defeat appears to have been something of a one off. In fact, it was the club’s only defeat in their last five, highlighting just how impressive they have been through the last few weeks.
On the team news front, Peterborough are preparing to hand a debut to Matthew Briggs who joined the club on loan last week. Elsewhere, Paul Taylor looks doubtful through illness, but Tommy Rowe is available for selection once again. It’s mixed news for the visitors on the other hand with Sam Allardyce set to be without Kevin Nolan and George McCartney through suspension and injury respectively. However, Guy Demel and Papa Bouba Diop will both miss the clash through injury.
As for a prediction, our tip is going to be for the obvious. While Peterborough may hold the home advantage, their form over recent weeks has been poor while West Ham have put some fantastic results together. Bearing this in mind, our prediction will be a 2-0 win for the Hammers.
