MLB: Day One Hundred and Sixty-Four

On Monday we took a look at the American League playoff races. So today, let’s take a look at the National League races. Since we are almost to the middle of September – and the season will be ending in just a couple of weeks – now is the perfect time to take a look at what is happening.
So let’s start in the National League East. That is where the New York Mets have enjoyed a fairly comfortable lead all season long. The Mets have tested by the Atlanta Braves a little and a little bit by the Philadelphia Phillies too. But overall, the Mets have looked like the team that will win the division. Right now the Mets are six games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. And they are eight and a half games ahead of the Atlanta Braves. The other teams – Washington Nationals and the Florida Marlins – are out of it, though mathematically the Nationals are still hanging on by a thread.
So it’s the Phillies with the only real chance to catch the Mets but they don’t have all that good of a shot. They Phillies would have to get hot in a hurry and the Mets would have to really start playing horribly.
Over in the NL Central, the race continues to be tight. Right now the Milwaukee Brewers have limped back into the lead. The Brewers are a game up on the Chicago Cubs. Next is the St. Louis Cardinals who still have a shot at four games back. Then the Cincinnati Reds check in at nine games back. Still in it officially, but not looking good are the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros. This division continues to look like it will be exciting until the end.
In the NL West, it’s looking like it will come down to a battle between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres. And right now it is the Diamondbacks getting the best of things. They currently hold a two and a half game lead on the Padres. The Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers are both six games back and things are starting to look bleak for them. Completely out of it is the San Francisco Giants at fifteen and a half games back.
The Padres are leading in the Wild Card Race right now. They have a two a half game lead on the Phillies and a three and a half game lead on the Rockies and the Dodgers.
These next three weeks should be very interesting as a bunch of teams continue to battle it out for just a few playoff spots.
