Bonds and Steroids

Posted on | May 13, 2006 | No Comments

Barry Bonds is currently chasing history. He has been sitting on 713 home runs for around a week now. Each game anticipatory fans pack the ballpark looking to partake in history. When Barry Bonds hits his next homerun, 714, he will tie the immortal Babe Ruth for second on the all-time homerun list. It may be another few games before Barry Bonds hits number 714. Aside from a body that is breaking down, Bonds has to contend with poor pitching—from a hitter’s perspective.

As usual, pitchers are mortified when Barry Bonds comes up to the plate. He usually receives an assortment of junk pitches and a free pass to first base. When a brave pitcher finally pitches to him, Bonds is taken aback. The end result this season has been Bonds popping up or lacing a single in the outfield. Did Bonds take steroids? If so, is the end result what is happening to his body this season? Playing back-to-back games seems to be very burdensome for Bonds. When Bonds ties the Babe and then moves into second all by himself, should the record be marked with an asterisks?

When Bonds has approached the plate this season boo-birds have hoisted signs high above that make comparisons to the “pure” player in Babe Ruth and the drug user in Bonds. Here’s something to think about. If simply taking steroids made you a homerun hitter, then why do we not have a lot of 70+ homerun hitters in baseball? Steroid usage has been reported as widespread. Yet, we have a league that is void of 60+ homerun players. We have a league that lacks a huge group of 50+ homerun players as well. Something to think about.
