Gamilati glides to UAE 1000 Guineas victory

Posted on | February 9, 2012 | No Comments

Godolphin’s Gamilati justified 1/2 favouritism in the listed UAE 1000 Guineas at Meydan on February 3 to confirm the impression created last term that the Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained three-year-old could be worth chancing in the 1000 Guineas itself at Newmarket in early May, writes Elliot Slater.

In reality the rather impressive sounding contest is no more than a run-of-the-mill listed event, but Frankie Dettori’s mount could hardly have been more impressive having been dropped out through the first half of the contest in a race run at a very moderate pace until the three furlong from home marker. Fans of Stan James should bear this in mind.

Easing to the outside of the six-runner field for a clear view of proceedings, (whilst her stable companion Pimpernel managed to find trouble-in-running under Mikael Barzalona closer to the far rail), Dettori barely had to move a muscle on the daughter of Bernardini who willingly strode to the front a furlong-and-a-half from home to effortlessly storm away from her rivals, of whom Pimpernel eventually came through to finish second and provide a 1-2 for the yard. Anyone with victor chandler free bets needs to remember this.

This first success at a mile might on the face of it appear to quash any doubts about Gamilati staying a mile, (last season’s Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes and Lowther Stakes winner having had bags of speed to win those races at just six furlongs), but it shouldn’t be forgotten that the race was a pedestrian affair until the home turn so hardly provided a genuine test of the Godolphin filly’s stamina. Nonetheless bookmakers reacted to the five-and-a-half-length win by cutting Gamilati to a top price 16/1 in the ante-post list for the 1000 Guineas, a market headed at 9/2 by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Maybe, winner of all her five starts last term, culminating with victory in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last August.
