MLB: Day One Hundred and Fifty-Nine

Well, we’re very close to heading into the second weekend in September and each team hoping to make it into the playoffs is finding less and less time to do so. One team trying to squeak their way into the playoffs is the Detroit Tigers. And the Tigers came up with a late rally on Thursday to win their second straight game with a walk-off hit.
The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox on Thursday by a score of three to two. The win earned the Tigers just their second series win since the middle of July. The other series win came against the New York Yankees just a little over a week ago. Now the Tigers are hoping this series win and the back-to-back walk-off victories can give them the boost they need to make a run to the playoffs.
On Thursday things looked very dim for the Tigers against the White Sox. The White Sox entered the bottom of the ninth with a two to one lead and their ace closer on the mound, Andy Jenks. But the Tigers managed to score two runs (the second one coming with two outs off the bat of the Tigers’ Placido Polanco) and win the game.
Now the Tigers really need to rattle off a bunch of wins in a row if they hope to have a chance in the last couple of weeks of the season. And they have the Seattle Mariners – the team they’re tied with at three games back in the Wildcard race – coming in to Detroit this weekend. You have to think the Tigers have to win this series to have a chance going forward. And if they really want to keep a decent hope alive, the Tigers may just have to sweep the Mariners.
So the series this weekend will be a big one for both the Tigers and the Mariners and the team that loses the series may just be out of it, though it wouldn’t be impossible for that team to make a late run. However, if either the Tigers or the Mariners get swept then you would have to believe that the team that was swept would be all but out of the playoff chase.
The good thing for the Tigers is that they have Justin Verlander on the mound. The last two starts Verlander has been very good giving up just one run in each of those outings. If Verlander can pitch well and the Tigers can win then that might just be enough to propel the Tigers into a winning streak that might get them closer in the Wildcard race and perhaps even the race for the AL Central crown.
