MLB: Day One Hundred and Fifty-Eight

Posted on | September 8, 2007 | No Comments

On Wednesday things continued to be very tight in the National League Central and the NL West. And when the races are so close, things can change a bunch in just a couple days.

A perfect example of how fast things can change can be seen in the National League West. Just a couple days ago the San Diego Padres were in first place by a game. Now, just two days later, the Padres find themselves in second place, a game down to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Of course when the two teams at the top are playing each other then it helps change things even quicker. And that’s exactly what was happening with the D-Backs and the Padres.

After winning the first game, the Padres dropped the next two games. On Wednesday the Padres lost to the Diamondbacks by a score of nine to six. And now the Arizona Diamondbacks will move on to play against the St. Louis Cardinals while the San Diego Padres will play against the Colorado Rockies. And the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team in third place at four games back, will be playing the Chicago Cubs.

So two out of the three top teams in the NL West will move on to play teams in the NL Central, and in the NL Central it’s still a very tight race. On Wednesday both top teams won – the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers eight to two and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Houston Astros fourteen to two. So the Cubs still lead the Brewers by just a half game.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates so the Cards now trail the Cubs by two games. So the Cards are still in the thick of things and they shouldn’t be underestimated with their great manager and their experience of winning the World Series last year.

Meanwhile in the American League all the divisions are still being led comfortably. The Boston Red Sox are leading the AL East by six games, the Cleveland Indians are leading the AL Central by seven games, and the Anaheim Angels are leading the Seattle Mariners by seven and a half games. The real battle is in the Wildcard race where the New York Yankees are currently leading the Seattle Mariners by a couple games and the Detroit Tigers by three games.
