MLB: Day One Hundred and Fifty-Seven

Posted on | September 8, 2007 | No Comments

Yesterday (Monday) I went through the American League standings with the promise of going through the National League standings today. So that’s what I’m going to do now.

Unlike the American League, every division in the National League is still somewhat up for grabs. The National League East may be the only division that is close to being sewn up, and that is where we’ll begin.

The New York Mets have been fending off both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves for the past couple of months. Thanks to a five game winning streak, the Mets have now opened up a five game lead over the Phillies and an eight and a half game lead over the Braves. So, unless the Mets start to stumble and one of the other two teams (the Phillies obviously have the better shot) this division is getting close to being over. The Washington Nationals and the Florida Marlins round out the NL East and they’ve both been out of it for quite some time.

Over in the National League Central things are very far from being over. Way back when the Brewers looked like they’d run away with this division and then for a short time the Brew Crew looked like they would fade away. But the Brewers are right there. They are just a half game behind the division leading Chicago Cubs right now. In third place is the St. Louis Cardinals at just a game back. Then the other three teams in the NL Central – the Cincinnati Reds, the Houston Astros, and the Pittsburgh Pirates – are all nine games or more back.

In the National League West things are even tighter. Right now the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks are tied atop the division. Then the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies are three games back and four games back, respectively. Then in the basement of the National League West is the San Francisco Giants.

Just as San Diego and Arizona are tied atop the NL West, they are also tied atop the NL Wildcard. Then the Dodgers and the Phillies are both three games back and then Colorado Rockies are four games back. So right now it looks like whichever team that’s winning the NL West right now but doesn’t win it, will grab the Wildcard. That means all the other teams vying for the other two division titles need to win their division in order to get into the playoffs.
