Since it’s Monday (the first Monday in September – by the way) now would be a good time to look at the standings and where all the teams in the American League sit as we head down the home stretch of the baseball season.

So let’s begin in the American League East. The Boston Red Sox have comfortably led this division most of the season. The New York Yankees have challenged the Red Sox slightly a few times during the season but the Yanks have never really mounted any serious charge. Right now the Red Sox have a seven game lead over the Yankees. Then the Toronto Blue Jays are twelve and a half games back and the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a bus ride out of first and completely out of it. So overall it looks like the Red Sox will most likely win the AL East.

Over in the AL Central the division has been just about wrapped-up by the Cleveland Indians. After it looked like this would be a tight race down to the wire, the Indians have suddenly gotten very hot while the second place Tigers have stumbled over the last month. Those two trends combine to give the Indians a pretty commanding six game lead. Then the rest of the teams in the AL Central are ten and half or more games back. Those teams, in order, are the Minnesota Twins, the Kansas City Royals, and the Chicago White Sox.

Over in the AL West the Seattle Mariners are fading fast and it’s looking like the Anaheim Angels will coast to the division title there. The Angels lead the Mariners by six and a half games. Then a distant third and fourth are the Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers respectively.

The real battle in the AL is for the Wildcard spot. The Yankees, Tigers, and Mariners are all battling for that spot. Right now the Yankees lead the Mariners by a game and a half. Then the Tigers aren’t too far back at two and a half games back. So this is where the real excitement might come from. However, if the Mariners and the Tigers don’t get it together then the Yankees might just run away with the Wild Card.
