Thursday some teams earned big wins while other teams suffered bad losses. The New York Yankees, the Cleveland Indians, the Detroit Tigers, and the Philadelphia Phillies all earned important wins while the New York Mets, the Seattle Mariners, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the St. Louis Cardinals earned bad losses.

In the National League the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies met for a crucial NL East battle. The Mets seemed to be in complete control of the NL East as they had a seven game lead just about a week ago. However, after the Phillies beat the Mets again on Thursday, the lead in the NL East is now just two games. The most recent game was an eleven to ten win for the Phillies who now have to feel pretty good about their chances to win the division.

Speaking of losing streaks, the Seattle Mariners have now lost six straight games after looking like they might overtake the Angels atop the American League West. Now the Mariners are five and a half games back in the AL West after losing again, this time six to five to the Cleveland Indians.

The New York Yankees have pulled back within five games of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. The Yankees completed the sweep over the Red Sox by winning the game on Thursday five to nothing. Now the Yankees will welcome the recently hapless Mariners for a series this coming weekend. Don’t count the Yanks out of it just yet.

The Detroit Tigers need wins to stay in the hunt for the American League Central title and for the Wildcard berth as well. The Tigers got a win over the Kansas Cit Royals by a score of six to one. Now the Tigers move on to Oakland to play the A’s.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to two and a half games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers lost to the Cubs by a score of five to four on Thursday.

Also in the National League Central the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Houston Astros and fell to three games behind the Cubs.

So now the Cubs have a slight amount of breathing room in the NL Central. However, that race is still very far from being over.
