MLB: Day One Hundred and Forty-One

Posted on | August 29, 2007 | No Comments

On Sunday the Chicago Cubs took a one game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, the New York Yankees extended their winning ways (while keeping the Tigers mired in their losing ways) and the New York Mets extended their lead in the National League East.

As I’ve mentioned before the Milwaukee Brewers started off the season so hot and the rest of the NL Central began the season so poorly that it looked as if the Brewers would just run away with the division. Then the Brewers started stumbling a bit but it didn’t look like any other teams in the division would step up to challenge. Then the Chicago Cubs’ manager, Lou Pinella, got kicked out of a game and things turned around for the Cubs.

With Sundays win over the St Louis Cardinals the Cubs have now taken a one game lead in the NL Central. The one game lead was achieved because the Brewers lost to the Cincinnati Reds by a score of seven to six.

So now it’s up to the Brewers to try to get back on the right track.

Speaking of getting back on the right track, the Yankees have seemed to do just that. The Yanks continued to play good baseball by beating the Detroit Tigers nine to three. The win pulled the Yankees to within four games of the AL East leading Boston Red Sox. Meanwhile the Tigers continued to trail the Cleveland Indians by a game and a half in the AL Central. The Tigers need to get themselves back on track if they hope to make it into the playoffs.

Finally, in the National League East, the New York Mets are beginning to take control of the division. The Mets won their third straight game on Sunday by beating the Washington Nationals eight to two. Meanwhile the Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Phillies loss coupled with the Mets win gives the Mets a five game lead in the NL East.

Tomorrow we’ll take another look at the all the standings in Major League Baseball. Many of the divisions aren’t as close as they once were. But the AL East has the potential to become a heated race, which is absolutely amazing considering the Yanks were fourteen games back just a few weeks ago.
