MLB: Day One Hundred and Thirty-Nine

On Friday the New York Yankees got back onto the winning side of things and the Milwaukee Brewers finally gave up first place in the National League Central. Also, Brandon Webb ran his scoreless inning streak to forty-two straight innings.
With all the ups and downs the Yanks have had this season, the last thing they want to do is hit another losing streak. The Yankees started off the season horribly. Then they made a great run to get themselves back into the hunt for both the Wildcard and the American League East. However, recently they lost three straight games, which included a loss to the Tigers last night where they found themselves down by four runs after the top of the first.
Well, the Yankees were able to snap the minor losing streak on Friday. They beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of six to one. The Yankees got very strong pitching from Andy Pettite. They also roughed up the Tigers’ starting pitcher, Nate Robertson. The Yanks dealt Robertson his tenth loss on the season. Meanwhile, Andy Pettite improved his record to ten wins against seven losses.
An unbelievable pitching performance is going on right now in the National League. Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks has now gone forty-two straight innings without surrendering even one run. Webb’s latest pitching gem came against the Atlanta Braves and earned the Diamondbacks a four to nothing victory.
For the complete game shutout Webb surrendered only two hits. So not only did he not give up any runs, he was fairly close to pitching a no-hitter for the entire game. He’s been so impressive that opposing hitters rarely even get a good swing on the ball.
Webb’s sinker is probably his best pitch right now. Batters swing at the ball and end up only catching the top half of the ball, which results in just a harmless groundout. And that’s if the batters are able to make contact at all. On Friday night Webb had six strikeouts and only gave up one walk.
Webb is now just seventeen innings away from tying the all-time record for most consecutive innings without giving up a run. Orel Hirscheiser holds that record. So, if Web can keep it up, he’ll have a chance to have the record within two more games.
