MLB: Day One Hundred and Thirty-Eight

Posted on | August 23, 2007 | No Comments

On Thursday it was a little bit of a light schedule in the Major Leagues. The Cardinals continued their recent dominance over the Milwaukee Brewers, the Chicago Cubs gained a game on the Brew Crew too, and the Detroit Tigers got off to a good start in their series against the New York Yankees.

Things in the National League Central have gotten a whole lot more interesting lately. As we’ve discussed before, it looked for a while like the Brewers were the only quality team in the division. The Brew Crew stormed out to an impressive lead and looked like they could just coast to a division title. Then the wheels started coming off the track just a bit for the Brewers. And that opened the door for the Chicago Cubs to rise up and make a bid to challenge Milwaukee. Now the Cards have officially joined the party as well.

The Cards beat-up on the Brewers by a score of eight to zero. That moves the Cards to within just two and a half games of first place. And the Chicago Cubs also won on Thursday. The Cubbies beat the Cincinnati Reds by a score of twelve to four. That moves the Cubs to just a half game out of first place.

So now the question becomes whether or not the Brewers can make another stand and hold onto first place. Or will the Cubs and possible even the Cardinals catch and pass the Brewers by. It should be interesting to find out over the next few days.

Meanwhile, the Tigers moved ahead by a half game in the American League Central by beating the New York Yankees on Thursday night. Lately the Tigers’ starters haven’t been pitching well but Justin Verlander pitched well enough on Thursday to earn the win. So while the Tigers are now a half game up in the AL Central, the Yankees dropped to five and a half games back in the AL East. The Yankees have now lost three straight games.

The Yankees have done most of the work of getting themselves back into the race for the division and the race for the AL Wildcard. But they don’t want to hit a losing streak now. So the Yanks will be looking to get back on the winning side of things on Friday night against the Tigers.
