MLB: Day One Hundred and Thirty-Six

On Tuesday there were quite a few meaningful games going on. The Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians kicked off a short two games series, the St Louis Cardinals continued to draw closer to the Milwaukee Brewers, and the San Diego Padres won a big game over the Colorado Rockies.
The Detroit Tigers have been looking to get on track ever since the All-Star Break. They have the chance to do it now but it isn’t going to be easy. They play their next four series against the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees.
On Tuesday the Tigers got off to a good start by beating the Cleveland Indians six to two. For the Indians it was their fourth straight loss. The win gives the Tigers a one game lead in the American League Central. These two teams will meet one more time before the Tigers head off to New York to face the Yankees.
Over in the National League Central, the St. Louis Cardinals can’t be counted out just yet. They are playing the division leading Milwaukee Brewers and they are gaining ground quickly. The Cards beat the Brew Crew by a score of twelve to four. So now the Cards trail the Chicago Cubs by just three games for second place and the Cards trail the Brewers by only four a half games. Considering how bad and out of it the Cards were a couple months ago, it is quite remarkable that they have a real shot at gaining the division lead here in the middle of August.
In the National League West there is a battle going on between the second and third place teams. The third place Colorado Rockies are battling the second place San Diego Padres. On Tuesday the Padres got the better of the match-up by beating the Rockies eight to zero. That puts the Padres two games behind the Diamondbacks and keeps the Rockies five games out of first.
The Padres were able to gain a game because the Diamondbacks lost to the Florida Marlins by a score of fourteen to five. So the Padres have to feel pretty good about putting more distance between themselves and third place and also gaining a game on first place Arizona.
