MLB: Day One Hundred and Thirty-Four

Posted on | August 22, 2007 | No Comments

On Sunday the Detroit Tigers won their second straight game, the New York Yankees earned a sweep over the Cleveland Indians, and the St Louis Cardinals won their second straight game over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Since the All-Star Break the Detroit Tigers are just trying to string together a few wins again. They came into this past weekend against the Oakland A’s needing to gain ground on the Cleveland Indians. And thanks to the Indians being swept, the Tigers were able to gain ground. In fact, the Tigers have won two straight games and now lead the four game series two games to one. So now the Tigers are a half game ahead of the Indians. Whether they win or not tomorrow will determine whether the Tigers will be tied atop the division when they play the Indians on Tuesday or whether the Tigers will have a one game lead.

Thanks to sweeping the Cleveland Indians (as we just mentioned), the Yankees are now just four games behind the Boston Red Sox. That means the Yanks have gained ten games on the Boston Red Sox in just the past couple of months. Unbelievable.

So now all those people who has buried the Yankees (including me) have to admit that the race for the American League East is anything but over.

The Yankees are pitching and hitting unbelievably well. And they show no signs of slowing down.

Finally, the St Louis Cardinals are beginning to that they aren’t out of the playoff race either. After looking like they were too hung over from winning the World Series, the Cards are now showing major signs of life. The Cards continued to do well by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second straight game.

What an up and down season this has been for the Cards who have experienced the death of a pitcher way back at the beginning of the season. They also lost most of their starting rotation over the off season. But the Cards are still hanging around and they have a very real shot at winning the National League Central.

A lot of credit has to go to Tony La Russa who has done a wonderful job of keeping this team together and has also kept this team believing. The Cards could’ve packed it up a long time ago and decided to just be happy with their World Series win last year. Instead La Russa has kept them on track and they aren’t too far from a playoff spot.
