International Friendly – England v. Germany
Posted on | August 21, 2007 | No Comments
An England side struggling in its bid to qualify for the European Championships in 2008 take on a new look German outfit in an international friendly at the new Wembley. The first friendly at the new stadium saw England share the spoils with Brazil as a late Diego header cancelled out John Terry’s goal. The match also marked the comeback of David Beckham to the English fold.
England are currently fourth in their group and will have to get their act right soon if they intend to make it to Austria and Switzerland. England have been plagued with a host of injuries. David Bentley has been omitted from the squad for reasons best known to Mclaren. Also, striker Andy Johnson has pulled out due to a knee injury. Manchester United recruit Owen Hargreaves and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard have also been ruled out due to injury. Darren Bent has pulled out due to a thigh strain. Jamie Carragher has ‘retired’ from international duty and thus Micah Richards may get the nod to start at centre back. Michael Owen might have to start the game up front.
David Beckham was seen with lots of strapping about his ankles and it is unsure if he will take his position on the right.
German coach Joachim Rowe has problems aplenty. He is missing key players such as Michael Ballack, Torsten Frings, Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Tim Borowski, Lukas Podolski all due to injury. And it will be an uphill task for him against the English unit.
I am going for a 2-0 England win with goals from Lampard and Crouch.
