MLB: Day One Hundred and Thirty-Three

Posted on | August 21, 2007 | No Comments

On Saturday the important series we discussed yesterday continued. The Arizona Diamondbacks remained hot and got great pitching from Brandon Webb, the Yankees also remained hot, and the Atlanta Braves knocked down the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a great thing going with their pitcher Brandon Webb. Webb now has thrown shutout baseball for the past thirty-three innings. He went the entire game – nine scoreless innings – again on Saturday. And this time it was under pressure the whole time as the D-Backs edged the Washington Nationals one to nothing.

The D-Backs only run came when rookie Justin Upton hit a triple to score Eric Byrnes in the fourth inning. Of course that one run was plenty for Webb.

Though Webb’s scoreless inning streak is amazing, he still has a ways to go before he breaks the record. That record is held by Orel Herschiser and stands at fifty-nine innings.

Meanwhile the New York Yankees remained hot and got a great pitching performance from their starting pitcher Mike Mussina. Mussina and the Yankees won the game easily eleven to two. One of the stories of the game was the fact that Alex Rodriguez went deep again. It was his thirty-ninth homer of the season. However, despite the fact that the Yanks won, the Boston Red Sox won too so the Yankees didn’t gain any ground in the American League East.

The Atlanta Braves continue to show that they are serious about making a run at the National League East. They jumped out early on the Phillies and took a big lead six to one. But the Phillies slowly chipped away at the lead and they got within a two runs twice. But in the end the Braves won the game seven to five.

Unlike the Yankees, the Braves were able to gain a lead in their division. That’s because the Mets lost to the Florida Marlins seven to five. That win draws the Braves with two games of the Mets and actually helped them leap over the Phillies into second place. Philadelphia is now three games behind the Mets. So the Mets have to watch out for both the Braves and the Phillies.

Once again on Sunday all these teams will continue to battle. These are just three of the many important games that are taking place this weekend.
