MLB: Day One Hundred and Twenty-Eight

Since it’s the first Monday of August and the beginning of another week, now would be another good time to take an in-depth look at the races in each division. Today we’ll look at the American League and tomorrow we’ll analyze the National League. And as we take a look at them some of the divisions are becoming a little less competitive, but not all of them.
In the American League East the Boston Red Sox are still holding first place. The Sox still have a comfortable six game lead over the surging New York Yankees. The Red Sox are clearly the best team in baseball right now. Right now the Yanks may very well be the second best team. The Toronto Blue Jays are eleven and half games back and in third place. Then comes the Baltimore Orioles followed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The American League Central is currently a three team race with the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers being separated by just a half game. This is perhaps the tightest race in baseball and is definitely the best race in the American League. The Indians and the Tigers are followed by the Minnesota Twins. The Twins are just five and half games back and they’re charging hard. Then in fourth and fifth place is the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals respectively.
Things in the AL West are a little less competitive than they were just a few days ago. The Anaheim Angels have put some distance between themselves and the Seattle Mariners. The Angels lead stands at four games. Then there are eight games that separate the Mariners from third place Oakland. Then in the cellar of the AL West sits the Texas Rangers at seventeen and a half games back.
When we look at the Wildcard Race in the American League, there are three teams at the top separated by just one game. The Detroit Tigers are barely holding a half games lead over the New York Yankees. And just one game out of the Wildcard spot sits the Seattle Mariners. But given the way the Tigers have played and the Yankees have played, it seems like the Yanks will be taking over the Wildcard lead at any point.
Tomorrow, unless Bonds breaks the homerun record, we’ll take a look at the National League races including the East, which is getting exciting, and the NL West, which has been close pretty much all season.
