MLB: Day One Hundred and Twenty-Six

Posted on | August 16, 2007 | No Comments

Well, the wait is over. On Saturday it finally happened. Barry Bonds finally tied Hank Aaron. And so now the wait begins for Bonds to set the new mark and become the supposed “all-time homerun king”.

I’m getting tired of paying attention to Bonds so hopefully he’ll break it soon and get it over with. Then we can all go back to paying attention to what’s right about baseball and how great the pennant races are this year.

Ironically on the same day Bonds tied the record, Alex Rodriguez also hit his five hundredth homerun. A-Rod went deep in the first inning to finally reach the milestone. It was actually a three run homer and it was part of another offensive explosion by the New York Yankees.

The Yankees actually put-up sixteen runs against the Kansas City Royals and won the game sixteen to eight. This kept the Yankees seven games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. It also pulled the Yanks closer to the Wild Card lead.

The Yanks got closer because the Detroit Tigers lost again and actually lost their lead in the American League Central. The Cleveland Indians took over the lead in the AL Central by beating the Minnesota Twins three to two. The Tigers lost their fourth straight game and are now a half game back in the division.

Meanwhile the Milwaukee Brewers continued to hold off the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. The Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies to maintain their one game lead. But the Cubs did stay within a game by beating the New York Mets on Saturday.

Finally, in the National League West, the Arizona Diamondbacks continue to play great baseball. The D-Backs are single-handedly putting space between themselves and their competitors. They beat the Dodgers on Saturday by a score of 8-7. That opened up a three game lead between Arizona and Los Angeles. However, the San Diego Padres are keeping pace and are still just a game and half back. The Padres beat Bonds’s Giants in what was an historic game.

And that brings us back to Bonds and his feat. And it reminds us that very soon Bonds will hit another homerun and become the all-time leader. Will it happen Sunday or will it take longer? Only time will tell.
