MLB: Day One Hundred and Twenty-Five

Posted on | August 15, 2007 | No Comments

On Friday Barry Bonds continued to try to tie the all-time homerun record and he’ll still be trying on Saturday. Once again Bonds couldn’t go deep so he’s still stuck on 754 dingers – just one behind Hank Aaron.

You can’t really blame Bonds for his struggles. Did you see the stands while the pitch is coming in. There are hundreds of flashes going off while the ball is speeding toward Bonds. Add in the nerves of tying such a huge record and nobody can blame Bonds for being without a homer for so long.

But you also can’t blame millions of baseball fans for holding out hope that maybe Bonds won’t actually ever tie Aaron. Logic says he has to do it sooner or later but maybe something strange will happen like all the pitchers will get together and decide to walk him in every at bat. Or maybe Bonds will finally wake-up and realize that he doesn’t deserve to hold the record because he cheated. And then maybe Bonds will finally win more than a handful of fans outside of San Francisco by doing something right for once.

But none of those things will happen. And sooner of later Bonds will break the record. Quite honestly, even though I don’t want him to break the record, I’m beginning to wish he’s just do it so that ESPN stops cutting away to all his at bats. I’m sick of seeing him bat. Enough already!

Also still looking for his monumental homer is Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod is looking for his five hundredth homerun for his career. Assuming he does it sometime fairly soon, A-Rod will become the youngest player to reach that mark. And as I’ve mentioned before, the fact that A-Rod has hit so many homers gives many baseball fans hope that A-Rod will break Bonds’s record in the next few years.

It’s amazing how many people have become A-Rod fans over the last several weeks just because of the whole Bonds thing. I’m one of them. And I still don’t particularly like A-Rod but I will be rooting for him to go yard in every at bat from now until he surpasses Bonds.
