MLB: Day One Hundred and Twenty-Two

The Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees are going in opposite directions, and it’s not the directions they were headed in just a few weeks ago.
At the All-Star Break the Detroit Tigers were thought to be the best team in baseball by many people. They had the starting the pitching and the hitting, all they needed to do was straighten out their bullpen.
Meanwhile, the Yankees were thought by some to be dead in the water. They were getting the pitching from their starters or their bullpen (at least not consistently) and their big hitters weren’t hitting day in and day out.
Lately something changed.
Now the Tigers can’t seem to string together any wins and the Yankees are avoiding any type of losing streak.
The only saving grace for the Detroit Tigers is the fact that the second place team in the American League Central – the Cleveland Indians – have been just as bad. So the Tigers have managed to cling to a one game lead in that division.
However, climbing ever nearer to the Indians (and the Tigers) are the New York Yankees. Because the Red Sox have played so well lately (and because they made some key trades to improve their team even more) it seems that the Yanks probably won’t catch them to win the AL East. However, the Yankees are quickly rising up in the standings for the Wild Card in the American League. And with both the Indians and the Tigers playing so poorly, it might not be very long until the Yankees sit atop the Wild Card standings.
Of course if the Yankees play well enough and take over the Wild Card spot then the Tigers and Indians will be left to battle if out to see who goes to the playoffs by virtue of winning the AL Central.
But let’s not forget about the Minnesota Twins or even the Chicago White Sox in the race for the division. The White Sox may be a bit of a stretch but the Twins are playing better baseball now and they’re known for making second half charges. Just look at last year when they made up a double digit deficit to overtake the Tigers for the division. While the Tigers and Indians have been struggling, the Twins have won four straight and they now trail by just six games in the AL Central.
