MLB: Day One Hundred and Four

Posted on | July 17, 2007 | No Comments

On Friday the New York Yankees found a reason to be even more concerned, the Chicago Cubs continued to play great baseball, and the Milwaukee Brewers continued to struggle.

The Yankees went into Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays looking to get over .500. They had their two million dollar a game hired gun on the mound in Roger Clemens. And when the game was over, Clemens took the loss and the Yankees fell back below .500 once again.

Clemens did not look very sharp at all. His command was off more than a few times during his five and a third innings. He actually walked four batters and gave up five earned runs. And this against a team that doesn’t exactly strike fear in most pitching staffs.

Clemens is now just 2-4 so far since his much publicized return to the Yankees. He’s making more money than most team’s aces but he’s pitching more like a fifth starter. You know there must be more than a few cases of second guessing going on behind the scenes. After all, couldn’t they have brought up just about any pitcher to go 2-4?

We’ll see if Clemens bunches of money coupled with his lack of wins begins to create any more problems for the Yankees who need to win a lot of games in a hurry if they hope to catch the Boston Red Sox.

Meanwhile, over in the National League the Cubbies are slowly gaining on the Brewers. The Cubs hammered the Houston Astros on Friday by a score of 6-0. That makes the Cubs just three and a half games behind the NL Central leading Brewers.

The Brewers have to feeling the heat as they’ve now lost three games in a row and seven out of their last ten. Most recently the Colorado Rockies beat them 10-6.

Look out because there’s plenty of baseball to be played and the Brewers aren’t playing very well while the Cubs seem to finally be putting it all together. This division could – just maybe – end up with a run away winner. But it won’t be the Brew Crew running away with the division, it’ll be the Cubs.

Now all the teams head into the weekend hoping to win their series. The Yankees are hoping to win both games while playing a weak team. The Cubs are hoping to gain even more ground on the Brewers. And the Brewers are just hoping to get a win and keep the Cubs at least an arm’s length away.
