New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

The Mets visit the Braves today and start a new series. The first game of the series is a pitching fest with Pedro Martinez on the mound for the Mets and John Smoltz on the mound for the Braves. The under/over in this game is a low 7 as one might expect. I like the over play in this game and I’ll tell you why. First, if both teams score just 3 runs each, we have a guaranteed push. Second, while both of these pitchers tend to be pretty dominant, they also tend to give up 2-3 runs per start and only pitch 6 innings on average. This means both bullpens will be making an appearance. Here’s some extra information you should know about this game.
- Pedro Martinez faced Atlanta once this year already. He pitched 6.2 innings and gave up 6 hits, one home run, two walks and three runs.
- Pedro Martinez typically does well in his short career against the Braves.
- John Smoltz is giving up 3 runs on average per game this year.
- John Smoltz is pitching 6 innings per game on average. Expect to see the Braves’ bullpen for 2-3 innings tonight.
- The Atlanta Braves are averaging 4.5 runs per game.
- The New York Mets are averaging 3.3 runs per game.
Let’s be honest. The numbers point to this game being around 7-8 runs, so the line is pretty good. The difference here is that the line is a low odd number, so you are really asking yourself, “Can each team score 3 runs?” If that answer is yes or most likely, the play is on the over. On 4/17, the Braves scored three runs off of Martinez.
