MLB: Day Eighty

Posted on | June 22, 2007 | No Comments

Interleague play continued on Tuesday. While there aren’t any overly exciting match-ups, there are a couple fairly intriguing series. One involves the New York Mets playing the Minnesota Twins and the other involves the Atlanta Braves playing against the Boston Red Sox.

Josh Beckett was back on the mound for the Red Sox. He out dueled Tim Hudson and led the Red Sox to a 4-0 win. Beckett continues to be the star of the Red Sox rotation. Coming into this season all the talk was about the Red Sox picking up Dice-K, and Beckett was more of an after thought. Now, here we are deep into June and Josh Beckett already has 10 wins and just one loss.

Of equal importance to the Red Sox is the fact that the New York Yankees lost to the Colorado Rockies. That means the Red Sox have added another game back to their lead in the American League East.

The New York Mets weren’t able to add onto their lead in the National League East because they lost to the Minnesota Twins. It’s been a rough past few weeks for the Mets. They’ve played team after team who is above .500. And suddenly the Mets have slipped down to being just an average team.

As for the Minnesota Twins, they need to begin to put some wins together or they might find themselves in too big of a hole after the All-Star break.

The Twins are known for starting slow and then finishing strong. But this year is unique because it looks like they’ll have to jump over both the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers to win the division. And if they hope for the Wild card then they will have to leap over a bunch of teams, including the Yankees and the Mariners and either the Tigers or the Indians.

On Tuesday the Tigers crushed the Washington Nationals 15-1, while the Indians lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6. That means the Tigers are now just a game behind the Indians in the American League Central.

Another notable game on Tuesday was the San Diego Padres beating the Baltimore Orioles 12-6. The game served as Jake Peavey’s 9th win. He’s now 9-1 on the season and has an awesome ERA of 1.98. As I’ve mentioned before, Peavey may be the best pitcher in the Majors but not too many people talk about him because he’s usually pitching while everyone on the East Coast is sleeping.
