MLB: Day Seventy-Five

Posted on | June 18, 2007 | No Comments

Okay, I hate to give the Yankees any more press than they’re already getting but what is happening with the Yankees is very impressive. The Yanks have won 9 straight games and they suddenly find themselves in the thick of the American League Wild Card and only 7.5 games out of first place in the American League East.

On Thursday the Yankees handled the Arizona Diamondbacks easily by a score of 7-1. It’s amazing that this is the same team that looked so incredibly lost just a few weeks ago. I mean, the Yankees looked like they were completely done. And the fact that Roger Clemens was on his way to become a starting pitcher wasn’t thought to be a bug deal at all. After all, if the Yankees were 13 or 14 games back without him and won 90% of the games he pitched, then wouldn’t the Yankees still be at least 8 or 9 games back when the season ended? At least.

But whether it’s Clemens coming back, or just players finally playing up to their talent, the Yankees look poised to make a run at the Red Sox and if the past couple weeks are any indication, the Red Sox could very well find themselves trailing the Yanks when August ends.

It could even happen sooner.

The Red Sox need to find their swagger again. On Thursday their latest set back saw their ace pitcher. Josh Beckett, get handed his first loss of the year. The Colorado Rockies got to Beckett early and often. The Rockies won the game 7-1.

This is why the season is so long and so interesting. There are so many twists and turns that nobody ever knows exactly what’s going to happen. And this year could be one of the craziest ever.

The final thing I’d like to talk about is the great season that Ken Griffey Jr. is having. Griffey is posting awesome numbers. He seems to be back to playing like he did 10 years ago. And nobody is really talking about it at all.

On Thursday Griffey went deep again. He has now hit 16 home runs and nearly 40 RBI on the season. He’s on pace to hit over 35 home runs and to collect about 100 RBI. It’s good to see Griffey playing well and staying well (at least so far).
