MLB: Day Seventy-One

Sunday saw the New York Yankees stay hot, the New York Mets stay cold, and the Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers all worked some overtime.
If the New York Yankees keep playing like this, they’ll find themselves right behind the Boston Red Sox in no time at all. Just two weeks ago the Yanks trailed the Red Sox by 14.5 games. Now, there they are just 9.5 games out of first. Unbelievable.
Obviously it’s impossible to predict that will happen and certainly no one expects the Yanks to make up another five games in the next two weeks. But certainly they can do that in the next month or so. And how will the Red Sox react if they suddenly see the Yankees just four or five games behind?
The Yankees completed the sweep over the Phillies on Sunday. And they did it by cranking out fourteen hits and thirteen runs. They won the game easily, 13-6. Now the Yankees will have a chance to get back to .500 when they play the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, losing has seemed to go from one team in New York to the other team. The Mets lost two of three to the Detroit Tigers over the weekend. Granted, the Tigers are no slouches but still the Mets were handled rather easily after winning the first game of the series.
While the Yankees and the Mets played in lopsided games, the Reds and the Brewers each won nailbiters.
The Cincinnati Reds played the Cleveland Indians in total pitching duel. The Reds eventually won the game 1-0 in the bottom of the twelfth inning. In the top half of the inning, the Indians had a chance to go ahead but Jason Michaels was nailed at the plate by centerfielder, Josh Hamilton, when he tried to score on a sacrifice fly. Moments later Alex Gonzalez delivered a game-winning RBI for the Reds.
In Texas, the game between the Rangers and the Brewers wasn’t low scoring but it lasted just as long. Milwaukee managed to score three runs in the top of the thirteenth inning to give the Brew Crew a 9-6 win.
This week Interleague play will continue for almost every team in the Majors. The Yankees and the Diamondbacks will be a good battle. So will the Tigers and the Brewers and the National League match-up between the Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
