MLB: Day Sixty-Nine

Posted on | June 11, 2007 | No Comments

Friday the first round between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets went to the Mets; the New York Yankees continued to look good; the Atlanta Braves continued to struggle; and – surprise, surprise – the Anaheim Angels continued to play great baseball.

The Tigers were in a slump a week ago. Then they took the last two games of a four game set with the Cleveland Indians and then two out of three from the Texas Rangers. Now, for the weekend, they welcome the New York Mets who need a win just as badly.

The Mets have been sliding the last few series and they need to string a few wins together. They got a win on Friday against the Tigers. They did it with great pitching. They absolutely shut down the best offense in baseball. And they managed to put up three runs against the Tigers pitching.

Meanwhile the Yankees continue to show signs of being the team that everyone thought they’d be at the beginning of the season. The Yanks beat the Pirates in a close one, 5-4.

Now they seem to be picking up steam and it comes at the same time that Roger Clemens is ready to return. He’s set to take the mound for the Yankees on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how the Yankees continue to play as it seems that just the mention that The Rocket is coming back has lifted their overall play.

Also, on Friday the Braves continued to struggle. They were trounced by the Chicago Cubs 9-1. That drops the Braves all the way down to just four games above .500. They would be in more trouble if the Mets could win some more ball games. But as it is, the Mets have been struggling just as much.

Finally, the Angels beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 10-6. The Angels trailed 4-3 before exploding for six runs in the top of the seventh. The Seattle Mariners and the Oakland A’s also continued to play well as they both won too.

The Angels maintain five and a half and a six game lead over the Mariners and the A’s respectively.

The big story for Saturday will be Roger Clemens and how well he pitches for the Yankees on Saturday. Certainly all the eyes in baseball will be on New York to see how The Rocket does in his season debut.
