La Liga: Real Madrid vs. Mallorca

The hospitals of the Spanish capital must have been working overtime on Saturday night, what with all Madrid fans suffering heart attacks. Never before has anything so dramatic been seen in Spanish football. So dramatic in fact, that it was more like a Shakespearean play than a game of football. Both Madrid and Barcelona were playing their respective matches at the same time, and you could almost seen the tenseness in the air. A penalty that shouldn’t have been given, a goal scored with a hand, and a last two minutes that will go down in history as the biggest turnaround in La Liga history. Van Nistelroy equalised for Real Madrid in the 88th minute, and Tamudo did Madrid a huge favour by doing the same for Espanyol just eighteen seconds later.
Real Madrid are still top of the league and tied on points with second placed Barca. A win against Mallorca will give them their first major trophy in four years, and it will be almost impossible for Madrid to give it up. But first they must beat a Mallorca side who are having quite a good end of season too. A couple of months ago they were going nowhere very fast, but at the last minute they have managed to turn their season around and were almost in a position to qualify for the UEFA cup. But after a goaless draw against Sevilla on Saturday, they will have to make do with finishing the season mid-table. They are still a threat though, and Real Madrid will do well to remember that they haven’t won anything yet.
Whether Madrid win the league or not, this game will be remembered for different reasons. It is the last match that Roberto Carlos and David Beckham will play for the Meringues. Beckham’s ankle should be in a better condition than it was at the end of the Zaragoza game and he is almost sure to start. Don’t be surprised if he gets in one of his famous freekicks to end his Real Madrid career on a top note.
I really can’t see Madrid losing this game. They have suffered so much over the last four or five games and done such an amazing job in turning their season around that they won’t fail at the last hurdle. Van Nistelroy is in hot form, scoring the two goals against Zaragoza, and he now needs just one more to be awarded the golden boot.
Prediction: Home win (3-1)
