La Liga: Athletico de Madrid vs. Celta

Celta have their work cut out for them here and they know it. They must win all three points and hope that both Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad lose. This week and in the last game of the season. A tall order indeed. The only advantage they do have is a better goal average over Athletic Bilbao, so if both teams finish on the same points, Celta will stay up. In their last league game Celta got a heart attack inducing last minute penalty to keep all three points against Betis, which kept their hope of surviving alive for another week. After losing five games on the trot it was imperative that coach Hristo Stoichkov’s men were able to invent something. Now they have to travel to the Vicente Calderón stadium needing a win. The stadium is actually a good place for Celta. Last season they won there by three goals to nil and have taken points in quite a few other occasions. Of course, this time round Celta are painting a very different picture.
As for Athletico de Madrid, they are still in sixth place and in the last UEFA cup spot for next season, but are hanging in their by the skin of their teeth. After that disastrous six nil humiliation at home to Barcelona they are able to overcome bottom team Nastic with two goals from young jewel Fernando Torres. Unfortunately he sprained his ankle and could be doubtful for this match. I am sure he will do everything possible to be present though, as it could be his last game in front of his home crowd. There has been lots of talk of Torres changing to the Premier league next season, and expect the buzz to continue through the summer.
I rather fancy Celta’s chances in this match. They are playing for their survival and with one eye on the scoreboard to see how Athletic Bilbao are doing as all the matches are to be played on Saturday at the same time.
Prediction: Away win (0-2)
