La Liga: Racing vs. Levante

You have to feel a bit sorry for Racing de Santander. A couple of weeks ago they were like little children waiting for Santa Claus. With their first possible European place in sight, everything was goodness and light. But how things can change in such a short amount of time. After losing their last two matches and only getting two points from their last five, Racing are now five points away from any chance of a UEFA cup spot but it might as well be fifty. With only nine points left to play for, they must come to terms with another mediocre season.
At least Levante still have something to fight for. They are currently fifth from bottom and just three points away from relegation, so they know that if they want to survive another year in top flight Spanish football, a win here is essential. After this game they face a powerful Valencia side and to end the season an intense away match to fellow strugglers Athletic Bilbao. Earlier on in the season Levante beat Racing de Santander at home by two goals to nil, but on the two occasions that they have visited El Sardinero stadium they have only been able to come away with a point.
On the team front, both Pedro Munitis and Zigic return to the Racing side after serving a one match suspension each. Last week they missed the game against Villarreal and it clearly showed. Racing’s goal draught is quite alarming -just one goal in their last four games- and the source of most of their problems. Midfielder Vitolo will also make a comeback into the first team after he also served a one match ban.
Levante meanwhile have good news too as Ettien, Kapo and Riga will all most likely return from injury. Great news for Levante as these three players are central to Levante’s attack.
I can see Racing’s woes continuing here for another week. They don’t seem to have the heart for a fight anymore, and seem to be waiting for the season to finish. Levante on the other hand, need a win here vitally. I’m going for a (pretty) comfortable away win.
Prediction: Away win (1-3)
