MLB: Day Fifty

Posted on | May 21, 2007 | No Comments

The first round of interleague games ended on Sunday. The day saw a couple sweeps and it also saw a couple teams avoiding being swept. The Detroit Tigers swept the St Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Angels swept the Los Angeles Dodgers. Meanwhile the New York Yankees avoided a sweep at the hands of the New York Mets as did the Milwaukee Brewers at the hands of the Minnesota Twins.

The Detroit Tigers were the first team in 7 years to earn a sweep in a World Series rematch. The Tigers downplayed the entire thing pointing out that they still have the second place rings while the Cards are still the World Series Champions. However, this series did point out how the Tigers are still at or near the top of baseball and the Cardinals are older and have lost most of the pitching that got them to the top last year.

Los Angeles opened a 4 game lead on the Oakland A’s with their weekend sweep. The Angels have now won 5 straight games. They will now get ready to play the Tigers in what should be a great series this week.

The Yankees were finally able to get the better of the Mets. They managed to avoid a sweep behind a rookie pitcher, Tyler Clippard, making his debut. The Yankees won the game 6-2. In the game Alex Rodriguez went yard (for the second straight game) as did Derek Jeter, and Jorge Posada. The Yankees will now take on their huge rival, the Boston Red Sox, on Monday.

The Milwaukee Brewers, who were lighting the world on fire in April and the beginning of May, have been faltering They were in danger of being swept by the Minnesota Twins (who had been struggling themselves before this series). On Sunday the Brew Crew avoided being swept with a narrow 6-5 win. The Brewers will now play the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Looking at the standings, there are all sorts of races going on – some close, some not so close. The Tigers and the Cleveland Indians are tied atop the AL East. The Dodgers hold a slim 1 game lead over the San Diego Padres. The Mets lead the Braves by 2.5 games. The Angels are up 4 games on the Oakland A’s. The Brewers’ lead is back up to 5.5 games over the Houston Astros and the Red Sox have a huge lead of 10.5 games over the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees.
