MLB: Day Forty-Nine

On Saturday the most interesting stories may have been the losers.

I know I probably spend too much time on the Yankees, but they are the media’s darling. And they’re also a team that is full of high-priced players. So excuse me if I find it interesting how the Yankees do this year and I find it fascinating when they struggle.

The Yankees are really struggling this year. The media has blamed the Yankees woes on injuries. While it’s true the Yanks have had their fair share of injuries (and then some) they have plenty of other players that should be getting the job done. And while their pitchers have been injured, the rest of their team has been pretty healthy. The problem with the Yankees is that when they get the hitting their pitching falls apart and when they get the pitching their hitting falls apart.

On Saturday the Yankees hitting came through with 7 runs but their pitching (the bullpen thanks to another injury to a starting pitcher) gave-up 10 runs. So, because the Red Sox split their doubleheader with the Braves, the Yankees are now 10.5 games out of first place in the American League East.

Again, I would think Steinbrenner is going to get very impatient with Torre after a series like this, even if the Yankees win on Sunday night. However, coming up next is Boston so the Yankees probably will have Torre around for at least another few games. The Yanks better hope they don’t lose any more ground while playing the Red Sox.

Over in the National League is where our second interesting story about a loser can be found. The Brewers were the feel good story of the year for the first month and a half or so. However, lately the Brew Crew has fallen on some hard times. The Milwaukee Brewers lost again on Saturday. They fell to the Minnesota Twins 5-2.

Slowly the Houston Astros are gaining on the Brewers. The lead for the Brewers is now down to 4.5 games. On the positive side for the Brewers, Houston is only a .500 ball club. So, even though the Brewers have fallen to their knees in the last dozen games or so, they still have a very good shot at winning the division. However, they’re letting the other teams in their division back into the race and there’s still a ton of baseball to be played.

Big series to look for this week are the Yanks against the Red Sox, the Tigers playing the Angels, the Mets will play the Braves, and the Brewers will battle the Dodgers. Those are just a few of the great series being played.
