MLB: Day Forty-Eight
Interleague play began on Friday night and the Yankees, along with their manager, may be in some trouble. The Yankees lost to their cross-town rivals, the Mets, and in doing so they fell behind the American League East leading Boston Red Sox by 10 games.
The Mets beat the Yankees 3-2 thanks to a 2 run homer hit by Endy Chevez in the 5th inning. The Mets pitching kept the Yankees quiet after that and the Mets held on for the win.
Once again it was lack of hitting that did the Yankees in. It’s amazing that the Yankees can’t score more runs a batting line-up that usually includes Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Jorge Posada, Robinson Cano, and Hideki Matsui. They have an All-Star line-up.
Just watch for George Steinbrenner to fire Joe Torre if this continues. Being under .500 and 10 games back is not acceptable for King George’s team.
Also on Friday, the Detroit Tigers made their World Series rematch with the St Louis Cardinals a lopsided victory. The Tigers won 14-4 after leading 14-0 at one point. The Tigers got a very strong pitching performance from 20 year old Andrew Miller. Miller gave-up no runs in 6 innings pitched. This was the first Major League game he’s started in his career. With Chad Durbin pitching for the injured Kenny Rogers, the Tigers had to call-up Miller to pitch for Jeremy Bonderman. Miller looked good and has to be considered another great asset to what might be the deepest pitching staff in the Majors.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Minnesota Twins in another match-up. The Brewers are beginning to reel a bit. They’ve now lost 5 out of their last 6 games. They still have a comfortable lead over the Houston Astros but they have to be concerned with their recent struggles.
The Twins beat-up on the Brewers 8-1. After scoring their sole run in the 1st inning, the Brewers surrendered 8 straight runs including 5 in the 3rd inning.
On Saturday the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves will play a double header because their game was rained-out on Friday. That will be a couple good games to watch as will the Yankees and Mets.
