MLB: Day Forty-Seven

The doubleheader match-up between the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox turned out to be two good games but a sweep for the Red Sox.
The day started off badly for the Tigers when they learned Mike Maroth would not be able to start in the first game. Maroth had to be sent back to Detroit with a stomach flu. He became sick over night, which means he would’ve been able to pitch if the game wasn’t rained out the night before.
So, the Tigers had to get a spot start from Zach Miner in the first game and then they had to send Chad Durbin, who replaced injured Kenny Rogers in the rotation, in the second game. However, it wasn’t the pitching that lost either game for the Tigers. In fact, it was the lack of scoring runs that did the Tigers in. They only managed to score one run in the first game and two runs in the second game. The Red Sox won the games 2-1 and 4-2.
The Red Sox will now move-on to play the Atlanta Braves as interleague play begins this weekend. While it’s still early, the match-up between the Braves and Red Sox could be a preview of the World Series.
Other big match-ups this weekend include the Cleveland Indians against the Cincinnati Reds, the sagainst the St. Louis Cardinals, the LA Dodgers against the LA Angels, the Oakland A’s against the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Mets against the New York Yankees.
The Yankees seem to be running out of time in the American League East. Though it’s still early (as I keep saying), the Yankees could find themselves 10.5 games back on Saturday morning – that’s a larger deficit than they’ve ever had under Joe Torre. Plus, if the Yankees don’t play well, if they get swept or maybe even if they lose two out of three, then there may be some changes brewing. These changes may involve the firing of Joe Torre.
For all those traditionalists who hated the change to interleague play, even they have to be interested in many of the match-ups. There should be many great games and many great storylines playing out.
