MLB: Day Forty-Four

The big match-up between two of the American League’s division leaders wasn’t much of a contest in the end. The first game of the series pitting the Detroit Tigers against the Boston Red Sox went completely the Red Sox way.
The great thing for the Red Sox is that Dice-K started on the mound for them and pitched a complete game. While Dice-K’s record before this game was very solid (4-2) he had yet to show the greatness the Red Sox believed they were getting when they paid so much money for him. On Monday night he finally looked great.
Dice-K went 9 innings and gave-up just one run (a solo homer to Curtis Granderson) and six hits. And this performance came against a team that’s been scoring runs in bunches. In fact, the Tigers came into the game scoring 26 runs in the past 4 games. But Dice-K shut the Tigers right down.
Nate Robertson started for the Tigers and took the loss. The final score was 7-1 but the game wasn’t decided until the bottom of the eight when Boston scored 4 runs to go up by their eventual winning margin of 6 runs.
Over in the National League there was another near no-hitter. This came in the game featuring the Atlanta Braves against the Washington Nationals. The Nationals’ Jason Bergman entered the game winless (0-3) but he made sure he got a win on this night. He pitched 7 innings of no-hit ball. However, in the 8th inning he gave-up a leadoff homer to Brian McCann. He ended up finishing the 8th inning. He and the Nationals won the game 2-1.
Back over in the Detroit and Boston series, Justin Verlander is scheduled to take the mound for the Tigers while Tim Wakefield is set to be on the bump for the Red Sox. This is a match-up of 2 great pitchers who have completely different styles. Verlander throws heat and has been known to hit 100 miles per hour with his fastball. Meanwhile Wakefield is a knuckle ball thrower and most of his pitchers will come across the plate at almost half the speed of Verlander’s.
Tuesday will have a full slate of games. One more interesting game will feature the Milwaukee Brewers against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Brewers have lost 2 in a row and 3 or 4 games. They’ll try to get back on the winning side of things Tuesday night.
