MLB: Day Forty-Three

The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox took part in a wild game on Sunday. It didn’t start out wild, in fact it wasn’t until the last of the 9th that it happened, but by the end something crazy went down.
The game began with Josh Beckett on the mound for the Red Sox. Beckett came into the game winning all 7 of his first 7 starts. However, on Sunday he had his shortest outing by far. He lasted just 4 innings while giving up 2 runs and 2 hits. Beckett had to leave early because his skin separated on one of his pitching fingers. He will be evaluated in the next couple of days to see whether he’ll be able to make his next scheduled start.
Meanwhile the pitcher on the other side, the Orioles’ Jeremy Guthrie, pitched brilliantly only to be disappointed in the end. Guthrie threw 8 1/3 innings giving up just 3 hits and 1 run. He was pulled in the 9th inning, after just 94 pitches, and that’s when the bullpen came in and the Red Sox came alive.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the 9th, the Red Sox rallied for a 6-5 win. The game ended when a grounder to 1st was fielded and then flipped to the covering pitcher, Chris Ray. Ray dropped the ball and the winning run came across the plate to end the game. Had Ray caught the ball, it would’ve been out number 3 and the game would’ve gone to extra innings.
The Red Sox now own the Major’s best record with a 25-11 mark.
Meanwhile, the big National League showdown between the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers was won by the Mets – for now. The Mets took the series 2 games to 1. On Sunday the Mets pounded the Brewers 9-1. In doing so, the Mets also handed Chris Capuano his first loss of the season.
The other team from New York – the Yankees – still hasn’t pulled out of their funk. Just when it seemed like they would get it together, they’ve taken another step back. The Yankees pulled themselves back up to the .500 mark last week but over the weekend they lost 2 of 3 to the Mariners and now the Yanks are 2 games under .500.
One of the more interesting series starting Monday is the American League East leading Boston Red Sox taking on the American League Central leading Detroit Tigers at Fenway. Dice-K will be on the mound for the Red Sox while Nate Robertson will pitch for the Tigers.
